The Milky Way ...

A couple of weeks ago two guys from the camera club invited me to join them in a night shoot. We are piled in one car and drove to Killarney, about 90 minutes from here in Kinsale. The hope was to get a clear night with no moon. We knew the moon wouldn't rise until are 2:00am, so fingers crossed on the 'clear night' part as that is rare.

We checked into our B & B, went out for dinner, then headed to a place called The Gap of Dunloe, about 20 minutes outside of the town. We arrived around 10:00 pm to get set up in the middle of a sheep pasture! We could see the 'gap' of the mountains plus a small lake between us and the gap. This is where we wanted the Milky Way to appear! Our photography night sky app said we had a chance, and at about 1:30 am, I got the shot here!

Cobh, Ireland

There is an amazing cathedral in the port town of Cobh, Co Cork - Cobh is pronoumced 'Cove' and we visited this village last week; it is very near Cork, actually a part of Cork. Cobh is the last port Titanic docked before it's fateful voyage that ended in disaster. Here's a shot of the inside of the Cobh cathedral:

As you probably know we are involved with the Photography Society here in Kinsale. Last Tuesday was our last formal meeting for the summer months - we will resume again in September. One of the new photography challenges I have been learning is how to photograph local birds. As I have been getting a few common Irish birds coming to our new feeders, in the back garden.

We feed them raw peanuts and they seem to LOVE them. I set up my camera on a tripod just inside the door leading to the garden - and near the feeders. The idea is to figure out where the birds will land, focus on that point, and shoot away if and when they land. Here's a bit of what I've gotten so far...

on the feeder                                              Here are two beauties on the feeder...

bird                     I don't know what kind of bird this one is, but he/she is brilliant.

We Are Back in Kinsale!

It's hard to believe we have been gone for 6 months from our home here in Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland. We had a very very blessed time in America with family and dear friends as well as time to make new friendships. Kathy and I are indeed very blessed as we travel this road of life.

Since our arrival on 2 June, we have been running as hard as we can, and loving it! Our nephew, Garrett Long, from California, was with us a few days after we got back, followed by our first hosting of our annual 'Summer Team'. The image below is a glimpse of these brilliant young adults who stayed with us for 9 days conducting a four day Quest Club (games, crafts, bible stories, and much more) a musical Tempo Cafe' in the town and many other things. We got to try out all six bedrooms and even found enough beds in our new place to accomodate the entire group.  Here's their picture, taken in our back garden on a perfect Irish summer day!
